BALEAP and EAQUALS: Euroexam International on enhancing the academic skills of first-year university students

Euroexam International is thrilled to participate in two excellent conferences mid-April: BALEAP Leeds and EAQUALS Madrid. We will be using the opportunity to demonstrate an academic exam that aims to better prepare university starters for their academic studies.

While the early 2000s saw a massive Western European interest in Central and Eastern European institutions of higher education, today we can conclude that there is a growing interest amongst CEE students in attending West European institutions.

In the past four years (2014-2018) there has been a 75% increase in UK university enrolments from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Moreover, a recently published UK MoE strategy outlined the goal of significantly increasing international student numbers by the year 2030.

However, a survey conducted by Euroexam International in four CEE countries demonstrates that first-year students struggle in more than one area when it comes to applying their subject knowledge within the context of higher education. The most challenging areas have been academic writing, note-taking, and presentation skills in particular.

In response to this challenge, a group of teaching and testing professionals from the Euroexam International exam board and from public-sector institutions have developed course materials to provide secondary school teachers with a set of teaching modules that they can integrate into their regular syllabus.

This teaching material is intended to assist teachers in two ways:

  • to help their students acquire some essential academic skills that they will need to commence their undergraduate studies and,
  • to prepare them for the Euroexam Academic test which will allow them to demonstrate attainment of these skills as well as a suitably high level of English proficiency.
